    About the artwork

E.1027 is a modernist villa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, designed by architect Eileen Gray and her partner Jean Badovici. Built between 1926 and 1929, it exemplifies Gray's architectural style, combining sleek lines and a seamless integration with nature. Gray emphasized comfort, functionality, and aesthetics in her design. The villa showcased Gray's innovative ideas about the relationship between architecture and human living.

In the 1930s, renowned architect Le Corbusier, a friend of Gray and Badovici, visited the villa. Their relationship soured when Le Corbusier painted murals on the walls without permission, disregarding Gray's intentions for the space. During World War II, German forces occupied the villa and used it for target practice, resulting in extensive damage and the destruction of original features. In subsequent years, the villa faced neglect and vandalism, but preservation efforts began in the 1990s. After meticulous restoration work, Villa E-1027 reopened to the public, showcasing Gray's architectural vision.
