Antoni Gaudi, Casa Vicens, 1885

Casa Vicens in Barcelona is one of Antoni Gaudí's earliest major works, completed in 1885. Its colorful ceramic tiles, geometric patterns and elaborate ironwork make it quite unlike most buildings I usually draw.

For this drawing, I started with the grid that defines much of the facade, gradually building it up tile by tile. What initially seemed like an overwhelming amount of decoration turned out to have a remarkable sense of order underneath it all.
