About the artwork

The Ariston Club, designed by renowned architect Marcel Breuer, is a significant architectural creation in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Completed in 1948, it exemplifies Breuer's modernist style and innovative use of materials like reinforced concrete and glass. Its distinctive "bi-nuclear" façade design, reminiscent of the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, adds to its architectural importance. Originally a popular entertainment venue, the Ariston Club hosted live music, ballroom dancing, and social gatherings, becoming an iconic landmark in Mar del Plata.

However, urban development pressures and changing tastes led to neglect and deterioration. There were concerns that the building might be damaged and corroded because it was left empty and it's near the ocean. This could make it difficult to restore the building. Fortunately, a report from experts said that the restoration is possible because the damage to the structure is not severe and it's only in certain parts. Ongoing restoration initiatives highlight the importance of the Ariston Club as a cultural heritage site in Mar del Plata, emphasizing its contribution to the city's architectural legacy.
